Weekend-Long Celebration to Open the Black Philanthropy Exhibit
On Friday, December 1 at 10 a.m., the ACLU's "Parading Toward Freedom: A Movement of Black Philanthropy" exhibit will host a media walkthrough. The exhibit at the TEP Center on St. Claude Avenue features stories of generosity and civil rights work on behalf of the African American community in New Orleans. The exhibit will highlight the impact and power of Black philanthropy.
The exhibit will highlight specific individuals and organizations that support the network of support in New Orleans. This exhibit is also New Orleans' local addition to the national traveling exhibit "Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited" (TSOP). Both the "Parading Toward Freedom: A Movement of Black Philanthropy" and TSOP will be open to the public from December 2, 2023 to February 29, 2024.
On Saturday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m., the 43rd Annual Ben Smith Fête will be held at the TEP Center. The annual gala recognizes and honors the work of the ACLU of Louisiana, the co-founder Benjamin E. Smith, and individuals receiving specific awards.
On Sunday, December 3 at 1:30 p.m., the "Parading Toward Freedom: A Movement of Black Philanthropy" and "The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited" will open at the TEP Center. Events happening the day of the opening include a tribute to the Power of the Plate, recognizing philanthropy through food, and a panel on the topic of historical spaces for the Black community in New Orleans.
