North American Tour Coming to NOLA this Spring
Tickets are now on sale for the Tony Award-winning Best Musical The Wiz, which will be showing at the Saengre Theatre. Performances are set to take place in New Orleans from May 13 to May 18 for a total of eight performances with varying start times.
The Wiz, based on L. Frank Baum's children's book The Wonderful Wizard of OZ, first premiered on Broadway in 1975 and won seven Tony Awards. Changing the course of Broadway's legacy, The Wiz is a sensational show touching on some of the pressing issues in America today. Featuring energized performances and powerful choreography, the iconic nature of this all-Black music spectacular doesn't end there. Taking an innovative twist on The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz is filled with music not usual to the Broadway stage, including soul, rock, gospel, and '70s funk.
The Wiz presents the story of Oz and lasting American fantasies in an entirely unique way through the fusion of dance styles and musical genres. Combining jazz, ballet, and pop, award-winning choreographer JaQuel Knight worked alongside a star-studded crew including Schele Williams as the director, Charlie Smalls, Amber Ruffin, Joseph Joubert, Allen René Louis, Adam Blackstone, and Terence Vaughn.
Much of the cast is making their national tour debut, including Dana Cimone as Dorothy, Sheherazade as Glinda, Kyla Jade as Aunt Em/Evillene, D. Jerome as the Tinman, Mykal Kilgore as the Lion, and Elijah Ahmad Lewis as the scarecrow. Alan Mingo Jr. will return to his role as The Wiz that he originated on the pre-Broadway tour.
