Five Spots to Celebrate National Mushroom Day October 15

By: Melanie Hucklebridge

While not everyone enjoys them, mushrooms are something that many can't live without. From mushroom risotto to mushroom steaks, they have a multitude of uses and can be good substitutes for things you wouldn't expect. Mushrooms come in many different forms, such as portabella and enoki, but their applications are nearly endless. Thursday, October 15, is the day dedicated to celebrating all the fungi: National Mushroom Day. Whether you like them raw or mixed with rice, here's a list of great spots to grab a dish full of mushrooms today.

Green Goddess

Located in the French Quarter, Green Goddess is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant that offers an eclectic dining experience. The brunch and dinner menus at the restaurant include several tempting mushroom dishes, with the most interesting being their mushroom gravy and biscuits. Their Southern-style biscuits are soft and buttery, while the mushroom gravy is full of herbs and flavor. It is a great dish for a meal on their patio. 307 Exchange Pl., (504) 301-3347, greengoddessrestaurant.com

Empanola

A small restaurant with big flavors, Empanola is a staple among college students Uptown for their great empanadas. This intimate Uptown location features a wide array of fillings in their empanadas, and their mushroom and cheese empanada is stuffed full of sautéed mushrooms, onions, and cheeses, perfect for a quick snack or, if you get several, for dinner. Available in singles or multipacks, their empanadas are sure to satisfy you on National Mushroom Day and beyond. 7321 Freret St., (504) 249-5977, empanolaempanadas.com

Josephine Estelle

If you want something a bit more upscale, Josephine Estelle offers great mushroom dishes on their brunch and dinner menus. The unlikely marriage between classic Italian recipes and bright flavors of the American South make this restaurant a place you must stop. Their mushroom toast is an excellent starter on the dinner menu, but if you want something more filling, their mushroom campanella comes with black truffles, mushrooms, and leeks. 600 Carondelet St., (504) 930-3070, josephineestelle.com

PIZZA domenica

Traditional pizza toppings include lots of vegetables and meats, but mushrooms are given a special spot at PIZZA domenica. Their mushroom pizza has wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, provolone cheese, and yard eggs, which make it an experience in itself. This Italian restaurant is a local favorite, and their food is a standout among pizza places. They have locations in both Mid-City and Uptown to make sure that you have great pizza whenever you need. Katie's

A secret of New Orleans that is catching on, Katie's offers an experience that is beyond comfort food. They have a plethora of options, but their seafood-stuffed mushrooms deserve to be shouted about from rooftops. Full of cheese, crab, shrimp, and white wine, the stuffed mushrooms are the perfect start to an evening of fantastic food. This Mid-City location is a popular spot and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. 3701 Iberville St., (504) 488-6582, katiesinmidcity.com
