A Multifaceted Solution: #FeedTheFrontLineNOLA

By: Kim Ranjbar

Inspired by the simple joy that sharing good food can bring, Krewe of Red Beans founder Devin De Wulf created Feed The Front Line NOLA, a non-profit organization that is garnering national attention, though it's only been operating for a few weeks. While "sending food love" to hundreds of local healthcare workers, the organization is not only providing some free edible cheer to our tireless hospital employees, it's also aiding participating, local restaurants struggling to make ends meet.

The idea, while seemingly simple, is a flash of brilliance. Here's how it works: People visit feedthefrontlinenola.org and donate whatever they can afford, from $10 to $300,000 (there's also a GoFundMe page where folks can donate in any increment). The organization then purchases food from participating local restaurants which currently include Cake Cafe & Bakery, Coquette, Beth Binudo Sweets, Galaxie Tacos, Heard Dat Kitchen, Blue Giant, Joey K's, Justine, Marjie's Grill, Pizza Delicious, Thalia and Tasty Treat. These food industry professionals, employing highly trained food safety precautions, make and package delicious dishes to healthcare workers all over the New Orleans area.

In addition, Feed The Front Line NOLA is also hiring local musicians and artists throughout the city as delivery drivers, offering steady income to those gig workers who are also facing serious financial challenges. According to the website, "99% of the money you donate will go to a restaurant, musician or artist" while giving food-filled joy to the deserving, hard-working staffs at our local hospitals who are risking their lives to save ours.

Currently, the organization is feeding employees at a dozen hospitals in the Greater New Orleans area, and at last report, almost 1500 meals per day. Feed The Front Line NOLA also partnered with Sofa King Fest who is currently airing 24, intimate live stream performances by local musicians to benefit The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Music Relief Fund and The Restaurant Workers Relief Fund. It's not too late to tune in today at sofa-king-fest.com!
