Spring into the Arts
The New Orleans Museum of Art hosts events all year round
and this May is no exception. This month will include a range of events for kids,
teens, and people of all ages to connect with their community and delve into art
this spring.
Each Tuesday and Thursday during May, the public is invited to
attend rehearsals with Lauren Melissa. Guests are welcome to watch open rehearsals
of The Beauty of Things from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The show is a
choreographed dance performance that is soon to be shown live.
Come join NOMA Saturday, May 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
for Studio KIDS!: Fantastical Creatures. In the program, participants will
learn about the artwork of Wangechi Mutu, whose art is displayed throughout the
museum and sculpture garden. Kids will then have the opportunity to create works
inspired by the art and from their wildest imaginations. Registration is just
$25 for members and $30 for non-members, with all necessary materials included.
Enjoy a literary discussion Thursday, May 16 with a Book
Club Discussion on Picasso's War: How Modern Art Came to America by Hugh
Eakin. The book club takes place each month as part of the museums programming
and discusses a range of fiction and non-fiction works related to art.
Registration is free to all.
Teen Night at the museum will take place Friday, May 17 from
6-9 p.m. Teens will engage with Intwined, the Wangechi Mutu exhibition that is currently
on display. The night will include a DJ, collage project, and book swap. There will be food, giveaways, and opportunities for community
connection.
On Sunday, May 26, there will be a Social and Emotional
Learning Workshop for kids ages 6 and up from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will
include a craft project creating guardian figures, story time about respecting
friends, and experience learning about the museum's African art gallery. The
event is free with museum admission.
Lastly, join NOMA Wednesday, May 29 from 3-5 p.m. for "Art
in the Afternoon for Families." Come explore the museum with your family and
learn about William T. Williams's Sister of the Eastern Star. Kids will
then have the opportunity create their own quilt design or color wheel inspired
by the art they learned about. The event is included with NOMA admission and the
museum currently offers free admission to Louisiana residents on Wednesdays.
