Costello's Louisiana Return
The show must go on, even if the city decides to shut down.
Thank goodness we didn't get an "out of abundance of caution" email about the
show not going on. Tuesday night's show at the Orpheum Theater was an evening
with event, so no opener. Doors were at 7 p.m. and the show kicked off around
8:15 p.m. Elvis Costello is touring with The Imposters and had Austin's Charlie
Sexton playing guest on guitar. Costello hasn't put out any new material
recently, but this 7-0-7 tour is his way of debuting some new material. The
Imposters this time around included Steve Nieve on keyboards, Pete Thomas on drums,
Davey Faragher on bass, and special guest Charlie Sexton on guitars.
Costello was very talkative Tuesday night, commending the
audience on braving the cold, and at times the set had a Storytellers
atmosphere to it as he reminisced on his love of music and those that help
influence him. The show overall to me seemed almost more for Costello and his hard-core
fans than the "general" audience, as it was not packed with all of his hits. The
crowd still loved every moment of the show and gave Costello back the love he
was pouring out on them. The show lacked the big set pieces that he has toured with
before but that let the band spread out and cover the stage easier.
