On October 9 and 10, the 31st Annual World Championship Gumbo Cook-off will take place in New Iberia, Louisiana. The event, also known as the "Super Bowl of Gumbo," takes place every year in Bouligny Plaza, where dozens of contestants gather to fight for trophies of various categories, from chicken and sausage to seafood. "The Wizard of Roux Returns" with food, music, and fun for all ages in downtown New Iberia.

The event, hosted by the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce, will be kicked off on October 9 with a 5K, followed by the Cajun Creole Food Fest, where everything BUT gumbo will be served so that you can save your appetite for the big day. You can sign up now for cooking demonstrations through iberiachamber.org. The gumbo battle will be held the following Sunday, where contestants will compete for bragging rights worthy of a gumbo master!

This delicious tradition was started over 30 years ago to generate more revenue for the chamber of commerce, but also to bolster the identity of the city of New Iberia as a hub of great culture and culinary skill. There is no better place to get a good homemade bowl of gumbo after all! It started with a couple of chefs serving out of their truck beds, but more and more chefs joined in the fun each year. Today, the event boasts 100 teams, 30,000 visitors, and over 100 gumbos to try! Bring the whole family for food and fun all weekend long!
