As more and more people are getting vaccinated, more and more festivals are returning to the Crescent City! Get excited, because thanks to Deutsches Haus, Oktoberfest is returning this autumn!
Deutsches Haus was formed through the merge of Deutsches Gesellschaft von New Orleans in November 1928. Deutsches Haus was dedicated to supporting German immigrants arriving in New Orleans by providing meals, housing, and assistance in locating family across the United States. They remain one of the oldest cultural membership organizations and are entirely volunteer run. Through their partnership with the University of New Orleans, the Deutsches Haus has created a scholarship fund for selected students to spend a summer in Germany.
The Haus has several festivals throughout the year. These events provide cultural experiences and allow funding for the Haus to continue to offer German events year-round like Faschingfest and the Austrian Wine Festival. This year on October 22-23 and 29-30, and November 5-6 and 12-13, their mission of fostering rich culture, music, and history is alive again as Oktoberfest returns!
Like any festival in New Orleans, arrive hungry and ready to have a blast. Enjoy brats and sauerkraut paired with one of over 20 different German beers. Dance off the full-belly-sleepies with Oompah music and the Chicken Dance. There's only one thing that could make this event even more fun. That's right, dachshund races.
Before heading home, stop at the gift shop and take home a souvenir. Can't wait for all the fun? The Haus is having plenty of fun activities before then.
