NFL Owners Pass Rules to Expand Instant Replay

By: Maddy Shenfield

NFL owners have passed a rule that coaches and a replay official will be allowed to challenge called and non-called pass interference penalties. This move comes on the heels of he officiating mistake that likely knocked out the New Orleans Saints from the Super Bowl. Coaches will be allowed to challenge calls and non-calls throughout the game except for the final two minutes, where the replay official assumes the responsibility of challenging those calls and no-calls. The decision comes as a surprise as most NFL insiders and observers thought it would take another year of research to effect change. However, NFL coaches united behind Saints coach Sean Payton and lobbied for hours on Monday until a proposal was ultimately passed Tuesday.
