Felipe’s Taqueria Creates New Margarita to Support NOLA’s Fatherless Boys

By: Valeria Vivas

For more than 14 years, Felipe's Taqueria has been a favorite for many in the New Orleans area for not only being a family-run neighborhood Mexican restaurant, but by also committing the freshest of ingredients to its customers in not just NOLA, but also Maryland and Southwest Florida.

Felipe's Taqueria is headquartered in New Orleans and, with almost a decade's time, has paired with the Son of a Saint organization to help mentor young, fatherless boys in the city. Recently, both Felipe's and Son of a Saint have come together and created a unique, signature drink exclusively for the people of New Orleans, a signature margarita named "Sonny's Margarita," which is named after Son of a Saint CEO Bivian "Sonny" Lee, III. All of the proceeds from a purchase of the new margarita will go directly to Felipe's Son of a Saint Mentee Scholarship fund to continue their mission of changing the lives of the fatherless boys of New Orleans.

"We have been so fortunate to have created these meaningful partnerships with Son of a Saint, first through our scholarship program and now with this specialty margarita," Lon Nichols, Felipe's HR director, said. "Their example inspires all of us at Felipe's, and we're excited for this venture and many more in the years to come."

Sonny's Margarita is made the traditional Felipe-style way by combining hand-squeezed limes with house-made orange liquor and adding in a touch of agave syrup, as well as a kick of Jose Cuervo Tradicional Reposado to give it both a refreshing finish and a perfect mixture of vanilla and caramel flavors. For the final touch, a coating of black salt is applied on the rim.

"Felipe's has been an incredible partner, and having Lon as one of our previous Son of a Saint Mentors of the Year makes this endeavor even more special," "Sonny" Lee, III said. "The success we've had with the Mentee program through their franchises showcases the power of what can happen when you provide a support system for young people that allows them to thrive."

The Mentee program gives individuals the opportunity of gaining first-hand experience by working directly with the Felipe's team. Various awards have been given out throughout the years through the program, with a $10,000 scholarship awarded to mentees every year if they maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
