Louisiana native Britney Spears, 37, is in a Los Angeles court this week fighting to terminate the legal conservatorship of her financial and personal affairs held by her father, Jamie Spears, for the last 11 years. Fans and entertainment outlets speculate that Spears is being taken advantage of by this arrangement.

A Nola.com article has reported that Spears's supporters have gathered outside the courtroom to await the outcome of the hearing. Members of the so-called #FreeBritney movement maintain that she was being held at a mental health facility against her will.

Her father has held the conservatorship since 2008, when she was diagnosed with an unnamed mental illness and displayed bizarre behavior. Jamie Spears and attorney Andrew Wallet have had complete control over her finances and personal decisions and are being paid a salary by the conservatorship. Wallet, who recently resigned, reportedly earned as much as $426,000 annually.

Spears has been seen holding hands with her mother, Lynne Spears, outside the courtroom, which has been closed to the public to protect the sensitive nature of the issues involved. The judge in the case has ordered an evaluation to determine her mental status.

Fans who claim that her music has helped them get through difficult times have gathered to offer her support now. "We just want to be here for her," one said.
