New Orleans Bars

Audubon Club
1225 St. Charles Ave.
566-1717
People are still shocked to walk into the Audubon Club and see its transformation from the Audubon Hotel of old. Stop by and see for yourself the beautiful surroundings while sitting at the bar and enjoying one of their great drinks. The Audubon Club also features a great Happy Hour, so stop by this evening.

Bruno’s
7601 Maple St.
861-7615
Uptown's greatest sports bar features nightly drink specials and free popcorn. The honest-to-goodness 'neighborhood bar' offers pool, darts, and an internet jukebox. Figure out how to work the music machine and you just may save some damsel in distress from, well, distress.

Cafe Banquette
3445 Prytania St.
891-5773
From the good folks who brought us the classic bar TJ Quills comes the new Cafe Banquette. Located on Prytania across from Touro, Cafe Banquette features a fabulous full kitchen with super po-boys and New Orleans classics like BBQ shrimp. Friday nights are super hot at Cafe Banquette with a free buffet, 2-1 drinks for the guys, and free drinks for the girls until midnight. Oh yeah!

Chelsea’s Cafe
148 W. State St., Baton Rouge
225-387-3679
This Baton Rouge hot spot has it all– great eats, super live music and a kicking bar scene. Located right on State Street. Worth the trip!

Columns Hotel
3811 St. Charles Ave.
899-9308
When you've been cooped up working inside all day long, the last thing you probably want to do at 5 pm is to go get cooped ip in some smokey bar where you're forced to fight your way through a crowd of people in order to get a drink, just to have some obnoxious fake-ID toting lush who's standing way too close to you knock it out of your hand when you finally get it. Well, the Columns provides a very classy alternative. You can relax and drink in style while waitresses serve you cocktails on the fornt patio of this beautiful old hotel with a view of the St. Charles streetcar line. So go sit, relax and soak up the scenery.

The Dock
1926 West End Park
284-DOCK
Folks from all over the city have greatly anticipated the opening of this new super-club near the lake. Drive by to see the action before the lines get too long.

D.B.A.
618 Frenchman St.
942-3731
One of the classier joints in the Quarter, d.b.a. uses pretty bartenders, an extensive beer menu and a relaxing atmosphere to bring in locals and tourists alike. With an older sister in New York, d.b.a. combines urban hipness with New Orleans' unique raunchiness. But forewarned is forearmed-- the VIP room is highly exclusive. Rumor has it even Nicholas Cage had problems crossing the threshold. P.S.--d.b.a. management requested we include the fact that their bar is a strctly anti-Budweiser establishment. Sorry, dude.

Gabby’s
6600 'A' Morrison Rd, Exit 241 off I-10
242-9829
A place with something for everyone in New Orleans East. If you're willing to venture to the far end of I-10, Gabby's just may reward you with cheap talk and cheap drinks. No matter how rough, no matter how rowdy, the staff at Gabby's makes everyone feel at home. With usual bar amenities--a cozy fireplace, video poker, pool tables and Tarot card readings--this neighborhood bar is one that brings in even the most un-neighborly of folks.

King Pin
1307 Lyons
891-4701
This neighborhood hang out is so cool, English won't do it justice, so we made up a bunch of words: Skeeze-a-rific, hipster-au-gogo, yuppy-pa-Elvi-fication, Uptown-ulous, badonkadonk, cool-bathroom-a-pithicus, local-mazing, bootie-licious. Happy-hour-free-foodascious. That-game-that's-kind-of-a-cross-between-bowling-and-air-hockey. They speak our language. Word.

The Little Easy
725 Conti
410-EASY
If you’re looking for a new place to party, carry yourself just off Bourbon to this new bar and grill. You’re sure to hobnob with a fun crowd. Great for post-party munchies!

N.O. Original Daiquiris
Various Locations

With locations all over the greater N.O. area, these spots rule supreme. So many flavors, it’s hard to choose! Get a gallon to go for your party!

Metropolitan
310 Andrew Higgins Dr.
568-1702
Big. Fancy. Three rooms, three bars, three styles of music- what more could one want in a nightclub? The Metropolitan meets this criteria and goes one step further with a dress-to-impress requirement and exceedingly chivalrous bartenders. Bounteous drinks plus writhing bodies outfitted in ridiculously expensive get-ups can = a good time. Unfortunately for you hipsters, it's only open on Saturday nights.

Mythique
1135 Decatur St.
568-1111
This coffee bar above Whirling Dervish is the spot on Decatur to go and relax. Sit back and enjoy a hot cup of joe over stimulating conversation.

Parasol’s
2533 Constance
899-2054
This uptown mainstay is famous for unbeatable po' boys and a St. Patty's Day celebration of unparalleled proportions. Parasol's is an irish joint whose personality is not dependent on kitsch alone. It has great atmosphere and great history, as documented by the newspaper clippings that adorn the bar's rough-looking interior. Drop by before, during, or after any televised sporting event for a cold drink, a scrumptous sandwich and a good time.

Pacific Bar and Grill
5243 Canal Blvd.
488-0100
People flock to this hotspot in the old Spanky’s location for great food and drinks. Try one of their homemade hamburgers. Multiple TV’s make it a great game spot.

Shucker’s Oyster Bar
1229 Veterans Blvd.
831-4002
Featuring a happy hour everyday, check out 2-for-1 drinks on Wednesdays and 25¢ oysters on Thursdays. Stop by on your way home from work to end the day right.

St. Joe’s
5535 Magazine
899-3749
Have a fun date, come with friends, or just enjoy a martini or two in the cozy atmosphere. The former Miss Mae’s is still kicking.

Tricou House
711 Bourbon St.
525-8379
One of the city’s hottest dance floors is now found upstairs at 711 Bourbon St. Enjoy the club of mirrors or venture on their balcony overlooking Bourbon Street.

Yo Mama’s Bar & Grill
727 St. Peter
522-1125
One of the Quarter's funkiest bars is down in the heart of everything. Yo Mama's has a great bar selection, but they really shine with their selection of tequilas. Whether you go for the top-shelf anejo or the mezcal with the worm, be sure to order one of Yo Mama's fine burgers to accompany it. Try the burger with sour cream and caviar for a true treat!

The Saint
961 St. Mary
523-0050
This is the new, hip, late-night place to be, sansa all that chi-chi uber-trendy crap we all despise. Good prices, cool bartenders, comfotable chairs, pinball, foosball, a country DJ, attractive people, not-so-attractive people, AC/DC, air conditioning and religious iconography - holy crap! The Saint is so rock and roll, you'll spit blood. Though if you are the editor of a free monthly, watch out. Some drunk fool may recognize you from your picture and ask for love advice.

Circle Bar
1032 St. Charles
588-2616
Of all the drinking/musical venues in this ol' city, the Circle Bar is quite possibly the smallest. And I mean that in the best possible way . When there's a live show going down (and they boast one of the area's most eclectic varieties of acts for little to no cover charge), the cramped quarters translate into a communal energy that corporate can only yearn for. With a genuine mayoral candidate sleeping upstairs and the best and brightest of the city's indigent population peopling the benches across the street, you can't beat the neighborhood for character. And get this: right outside the door is the only streetcar stop with actual seats for your waiting pleasure. I interpret that as a direct endorsement from the transportation commission. All this and dirt-cheap Pabst?

Donna’s
800 N. Rampart
596-6914
Donna’s is known as Brass Band Headquarters, with some of the city’s best brass bands playing regularly. Taste some of their great BBQ plates – super ribs and chicken!

El Matador
525 Decatur St.
569-8361
Great local and national bands can be found on this Decatur St. hot spot. See the live Flamenco show every Saturday for a taste of life in Spain. Viva El Matador!

Live Bait Bar & Grill
501 River Rd.
831-3070
This River Road stop has everything you need in one spot — live music, great food, and all your fishing needs! Great grilled chicken and salmon.

Maple Leaf
8316 Oak St.
866-9359
Get close to local and national bands as they jam on a small stage right in front of you. You can’t miss Rebirth on Tuesdays or hanging in the courtyard.

Rock ’n’ Bock
Clearview @ I-10 Service Rd.
885-9010
This up-and-coming club in Metairie has a reputation for housing the best local rock bands in town. Great drink specials ensure a rocking crowd to hear the bands jam.

Snug Harbor
626 Frenchman St.
949-0696
Some of the coolest jazz in N.O. can be found here. Have dinner early then grab a table near the stage to hear the jams.

Tipitina’s
501 Napoleon Ave.
558-0204
The Uptown music venue where you can make it funky. New Orleans' best musicians are regulars here, with the likes of George Porter, Rebirth, Kermit Ruffins, and John Gros playing at least once during the month. Old posters line the walls, a vending machine sits outside the women's bathroom and hearsay has it that rubbing the Professor Longhair statue will grant the gentle music-lover a dash of good luck. However, if you go upstairs and expect to lean over the handrail to watch the show, don't, I repeat, DON'T knock your beverage into the crowd below. A gesture of genuine stupefaction will not appease.

Ampersand
1100 Tulane in CBD
587-3737
This posh club offers Techno and House music lovers the freedom to dance the night away. Ampersand's warehouse style is warmed up by dim lighting and candles. With an extensive collection of fine liquor, you'll feel as elegant and worldly as the bar itself. And when you're all danced out, cool your heels on one of the velvet couches.

Carrollton Station
8140 Willow St.
865-9190
Every time I visit this bar, I feel like I should be somewhere deep within a secluded Louisiana bayou. The bar's dark, narrow and wooden and serves as a regular venue for a host of New Orleans acoustic artists. You'll hear a little bluegrass, a little country, a smattering of Cajun influenced rock, and a quiet friendly crowd not looking to be seen. Drop in for perhaps the only unadvertised and unwhored to tourists slice of New Orleans around.

Country Club of New Orleans
634 Louisa St.
945-0742
Check out the Bywater’s newest spot, located near the corner of Royal. A beautiful house with a beautiful pool, stop by for a drink during happy hour from 4-7. Great parties and theme nights!

DBD Lounge
4450 Wabash St. Metairie
885-2426
You won’t believe it- DBD has just had a major face-lift! The once local pool bar is now an elegant, chic cocktail bar serving over 50 wines by the bottle.

Dak Shak
2205 David Dr.
887-9944
Stop by for great daiquiris and tasty eats at this new Metairie hot spot. Enjoy live DJs every weekend as well as a super ladies’ night every Friday. $5 for a large daiquiri!

Friar Tuck’s
5130 Freret
891-4080
Looking for a friendly place to spend your happy hours? If what you need is cold beer and good grub, Tuck's is the place. This laidback bar is frequented by the college crowd, and features one of the best Saturday ladies' nights in town. Long live Tuck's!

Hammerhead’s Bar & Grill
1300 N. Causeway Blvd.
834-6474
Head on over to Hammerhead’s to watch all the games on their big 10 foot TV. Stop by Wednesdays or Saturdays because ladies drink free!

Joe’s Bar
1500 Cleveland
581-9809
Right across the street from Tulane Hospital, Joe's is the place to go after a stressful day in the ER. Or after your liver transplant. As the sign proclaims, this bar has 'the prescription for what ales you--especially if your ailment happens to be lack of interesting conversation or low blood alcohol level. Joe's is a no frills kind of place, where the bartenders are as dry as the martinis

Lamplighter Lounge
908 Veterans Blvd.
832-9909
This great dive bar is not only the coolest spot for shooting darts, playing pool, and having tons of relaxed fun, but is also open 24-7! Bring the guys to this casual hang out for drink specials and great tunes. Lanplight is perfect of all you late-niters who don't expect to make it home until dawn. And let's not forget about football season arriving soon. So, come out to watch the game with friends or shoot some darts over a few beers.

Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar
701 Tchoupitoulas St
523-8995
Whether you're a retired surfer or just dressing like one, Lucy's is definitely a gnarly place to chill out. With happy hour food and drink specials from 4-7, Lucy's southwestern Californian cuisine will put you in the mood to hang ten on a killer wave, dude. But beware of the tequila--the worm has been known to cause hallucinations, but if you eat it you'll get a free T-Shirt! So that's cool.

The Maxx
3217 Melvil Dewey
834-4010
Finally, there’s a cool nightclub in Metairie where you can dance the night away. Located just off Causeway, check out some of the South’s best DJs and caged dancers!

Silky O’ Sullivan’s
311 Decatur St.
525-1011
Adorned with college flags and fancy chandeliers, Silky's may look like a mismatch, but its patrons fit right in. Locals and tourists feel right at home in this Decatur Street pub. With live music, Monday night football, tasty bar food and gallon-sized drinks, Silky's might just be your perfect match. Check out their Memphis-BBQ for dinner or lunch.

Snake & Jake Xmas Club
7612 Oak St.
861-2802
Is that a garage or an abandoned shack? Holy shit! It's a BAR? I had never noticed Snake and Jake's until a friend of mine pointed out the small strand of Xmas lights that adorn the entrance. With Xmas lights as the bar's sole source of light, it is a bit difficult to tell whether that thing brushing up against your leg is just one of the strays that wander the bar or the hairy leg of the large woman next to you. But cheap drinks, dim lighting and orphaned dogs always make for a memorable evening.

Stitches Bar & Grill
3941 Houma Blvd.
454-6266
Located directly behind E. Jefferson Hospital, Stitches features tasty eats and great drinks. Stop by for ladies’ night on Thurs. and Saturdays where ladies drink free!

Twiropa
1544 Tchoupitoulas
587-3777
Hipsters head to lower Tchops for some of the best drinks and fares in town. Check out the airplane wing bar. Thursday night brings out the beautiful ones for Ladies’ Night.

Whirling Dervish
1135 Decatur
568-1111
Are you getting sick of these trendy yuppie bars that seem to be sprouting up all over town, where everyone looks like they came out of a JCrew ad? Well, the Whirling Dervish is anything but yuppie. Tucked away on Decatur, this bar has a dark, mysterious atmosphere that is intoxicating in itself. The root-entwined ceiling gives the place the look of a gothic jungle, but don't try swinging from the rafters. Head upstairs to Mythique for an even cooler scene.

Bridge Lounge
1201 Magazine
299-1888
Hot Date tonight? Impress him or her or it with your knowledge of world-class wines at this Magazine Street bar. From 6-10 pm on Thursdays, this elegant place serves up an interesting array of international wines at the bargain price of $12 per tasting. Don't be surprised if you feel a long, wet tongue licking your ankle though; it's (probably) not your date's. Pooches are just as welcome as people in this warehouse-turned-bar. (Maybe the extra attention will make her stop peeing in your favorite shoes)

Brother's Three
4520 Magazine St.

Some time ago the Brother's Three management was irate over their inclusion in our dive bar article, not understanding that 'dive bar' is a term of endearment with irony-obsessed 20-somethings. Lets clear some things up. This Magazine Street mainstay is the perfect place to go if you are seeking a no-frills drink served by good-friendly people in a clean and inviting environment that in no way resembles a dive. Seriously. This is a place to have a great conversation--a commodity in this Banana Republic age.

Butler's
140 Milaudon
861-3444
Every time I go to Butler's to drink, I get sucked in by the Atari--a throwback from my misspent youth. It doesn't matter how many people are dancing, either. No, my first instinct is to go straight to one of the two black and white TVs and play Space Invaders. With cheap-ass Schlitz, regular soul and hip-hop DJs, and a decor that's somewhere between a bowling alley and Good Times, Butler's is alwatys jumping with nubile young persons mixing it up. God, I'm such a dork.

Marigny Brasserie
640 Frenchman St.
945-4472
The newly renovated bar at the Marigny Brasserie is the chicest corner in town. Its posh furniture and sexy myyd lighting is reminiscent of a Manhattan hot spot. Their unique signature refreshments bring out the beautiful ones to drink, eat and have elegant fun. When you're out in the Marigny stop by to have the fabulous Cucumber Cosmo and you'll feel like you're in an episode of 'Sex In The City!'

The Dungeon
738 Toulouse
523-5530
"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here." If you're one of the nocturnal creatures you'll enjoy this club with opens at midnight and closes at sunrise. But beware, this gothic gem is easy to pass. With only a door to label the bar, you'll venture over bridges and up staircases to really get to the heart of the Dungeon. Once you've reached it, you might never be the same.

Good Friends
740 Dauphine
566-7191
Good Friends is a great bar full of gay men and lesbians and all their straight friends. It's quiet enough for a conversation and rarely uncomfortable crowded. The bar consists of two stories with a central bar and balcony. Though the balcony overlooks a quiet residential street, it's a nice place to enjoy the evening without the distractions of Bourbon St. shenanigans

Hard Rock Cafe
529-5617
418 N Peters
Hail, Hail, Rock-N-Roll! For 25 years the Hard Rock has lived as the king of the themed restaurants, and deserdvedly so. With great food (try the burgers), a cool bar and a super spot for live music, the Hard Rock packs in tourists and locals alike. Buy a T-Shirt and wear it with pride.

Hi-Ho Lounge
2239 St. Claude
947-9344
Tucked away in the heart of the Bywater, Hi-Ho's homey comfort and entertaining staff will entangle you in its velvety web. The first time I walked into Hi-Ho I was having a crappy day and it was pouring. Upon entering, the rich warmth of the red walls enveloped me like a womb. And the bar furniture sporadically covered in ruby-colored fur made me feel just a little fuzzy. The fuzzy, warm feeling intensified after a few drinks, and I shed the shackles of my bad day and let myself float.

House Of Blues
225 Decatur
529-2583
This French Quarter staple turns out great live music almost every night of the week, playing host to famous musicians and up-and-coming innovators every month. Where else can you see Dolly Parton on Monday and the Staff Talent Show on Tuesday? The bar area is always exquisite and the dance floor is the place to be for late night action. Sure, there's a balcony, I'm glad you asked. Because one time, while I was up there grabbing some drinks for a friend of mine, I looked out over the edge...

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Cafe
592-2565
1104 Decatur
From the legend himself comes a must-see music hot spot, complete with all-day live performances and splendid food. I recommend the conch fritters, they're excellent! Have Defending Best Bartender Jay Cal fix your favorite drink.

Miss Mae's The Club
4336 Magazine St
895-9401
It was 6 am, I had already closed down three bars, could not see more than one foot in front of me, and the stench of beer and vomit was still fresh in my hair. Next thing I know, I'm outside Miss Mae's singing 'The Hurricane' with a dirty old hippie who called himself 'Uncle Johnny.' That was the only time I had ever been kicked into a bar. Open 24 hours, Miss Mae's is a great place to go after hours when you just don't think you've had enough to drink yet. Their cheap drinks make a great end to an evening that has already severely thinned your wallet and your brain cells. Plus, if you've got some quarters and you're really lucky, you can try to win that dildo in the crank claw machine.

Molly's At The Market
1107 Decatur
525-5169
Rumor has it that recovering beatnik Andrei Codrescu hangs out here, but I haven't seen him yet. At any rate, Molly's attracts New Orleans literati and gutter punks with an ease that Bukowski can only dream about. But for all its patrons' differences (or similarities?), the Molly's crowd mixes well and always sports a packed house. Try the jukebox, but only if you plan to stay for awhile. Is my Hank Williams ever going to come on?

Nick's Bar
2400 Tulane Ave
821-9128
After a couple "1-800-F*CK-ME-UPs," this small bar located amidst a number of bail bonds establishments is a great place to chill out with a couple of friends, if you're looking to get really sauced for cheap. You can either play pool in the front room or lounge on the couches in the back. The couches are a bit, uhmm, worn in, but they're darn comfortable.

Sweet Lorraine's
1931 St. Claude Ave.
945-9654
Head on over to Sweet Lorraine's to hear some of the finest jazz in the city. Whether you grab a seat at the bar or a table with your friends, Sweet Lorraine's has a great bar with plenty of great choices.

360
2 Canal St., 33rd floor
595-8900
For some of the most spectacular views of the city, head to the World Trade Center across from Harrah's. Wednesday night brings out the beautiful girls for Fashion Industry Night.

735 Nightclub & Bar
735 Bourbon St
581-6740
Intern Jillian said, "It had three floors, a unisex bathroom, and I couldn't hear a single word my bartender was saying." "How was the music?" I asked. "It had great atmosphere swirling inside it's Bourbon Street confines. And even though I had to pay a cover at the turnstile, the vibe kept me coming back." "How was the music?" I asked. "Stick around late enough for the boys from Oz the drop by."

The Boot
1039 Broadway
866-9008
The Boot is a happening late night spot that is home to as many drink specials as it is to drunken college students. Go there during happy hour to sit outside, relax and grab a beer and a burger. But be warned because that relaxation may turn into over stimulation when you are suddenly surprised by a female oil wrestler or two.

The Bulldog
3236 Magazine
891-1516
This quintessential after-work Uptown bar boasts a beer selection of Soviet complexity, featuring five-syllable selections from behind the Iron Curtain. Common practice is to pick up a few pounds of Crawfish from the Big Fisherman across the street and meet friends outside on the picnic tables under the mister. If it's too hot outside, the tavern-esque atmosphere inside is a welcoming option.

Cowpokes
2240 St. Claude
947-0505
So who would have thought that the only Country and Western bar in the great southern city of New Orleans would be a gay bar? Well, it is. Only at Cowpokes will you see cowboys two-steppin' in full leather on a Tuesday night. The bar offers free line dance lessons, a country DJ and features a corral/ dancefloor in the style of the old west. In addition to the bar is a theater space that features numerous local and national shows and has been used as a meeting place for groups around the city. This bar is one of the finest community-building spaces in New Orleans and is great for a rootin' tootin' night on the town- just don't forget your spurs.

Coyote Ugly
215 N. Peters
561-0003
The city's sexiest bartenders reside at this new hotspot. Watch them dance on the bar, and ask for a "special" tequila shot. But whatever you do, don't ask for water!

Dos Jefes Uptown Bar and Grill
5535 Tchoupitoulas
891-8500
The far end of Tchoupitoulas is a little better for the existence of Dos Jefes. Though the clientele typically consists of young Uptown aristocracy, the bar itself is rather nice. There's a great patio area ringed by the most patriotic fence in the area. The patio also boasts a bar, though I have never witnessed its use, with the greatest feature of any bar in New Orleans-SWINGS! The inside of the bar is classy, and the menu is full of fine liquors I can't afford. A TV above the bar plays back and white film noir classics and the bartenders always look out for those whose casual wear does not consist of little black dresses. My favorite time to visit is on a weekday night, before the crowds arrive, when I can have the swings all to myself.

Flanagan's
625 St. Philip
598-9002
My favorite thing about this sincere Irish pub is the regular cast of local characters who haunt it-including ( and this is no joke) a horse -sized dog. But don't worry, he's friendly. My second favorite thing is that the pool table is rarely occupied. My third favorite thing is that there are actual Irish people behind the bar and not the midgets-dressed-as -fake-leprechauns to which we've all become accustomed. Flanagan's steers clear of the Lucky Charms-style fakery that plagues most "Irish Pubs"-the vinyl shamrocks, green beer, clamorous fiddle music and purple horse-shoes. This is a nice place to go for a Guinness, especially if you are looking to escape the Decatur Street din and meet some real people. And a Very Large Dog.

Howl at the Moon
135 Bourbon St.
410-9000
Grab your friends and head to Bourbon for great piano fun. Enjoy tasty bites and great drinks while singing all your favorite tunes.

Howlin' Wolf
828 South Peters
529-9653
Although primarily a rock venue, this locally owned and operated club still caters to a wide array of musical preferences. By combining established national acts and the best local bands, the Howlin' Wolf attracts indie-rock nerds, hippie chicks and everyone in between. And no matter where you stand, there's always a good view of the stage. On a more personal note: to the guy on whose head I dropped the ill-fated beverage from the precipitous balcony height, I'm SORRY.

Kim's 940
940 Elysian Fields
944-4888
The newest version of the new Orleans lesbian bar has hit Elysian Fields and happily resides in the same location as the legendary Charlene's of Louisiana lesbian lore. Hopefully Kim's 940 will experience the same staying power and success as the legend, but being a new bar, Kim's seems to be just getting its feet wet and searching for its niche. The bar features live DJs, numerous drink specials and a relaxed congenial atmosphere. Expect growing crowds as word spreads around town.

Le Gallery Lounge
833 Poydras St.
581-3111
Be on your best behavior before you take seat at the bar and enter the old world charm of Le Gallery Lounge in Le Pavillion Hotel. With the interesting mix of patrons you'll encounter, you'll feel like a world traveler, even though you're not. So, if you wanna feel like a million bucks for only $3.50 a drink, this is your spot.

LOA
221 Camp St.
553-9550
This classic swanky bar in the International House Hotel draws the town's beautiful people. Make friends with the bartenders to learn about their great special parties.

The Mayfair
1505 Amelia

If you find the flair at Friday's restaurants charming, you will be in heaven at The Mayfair. In this dark, rather cozy establishment, an array of masks, beads and dolls hang down from the rafters, creating a low canopy that looks like a tourist just done exploded. The close quarters you are forced to keep on a crowded night are actually a great way to meet new people - there's nothing like an elbow to the face as a conversation starter. If your'e lucky, the ownder - a raunchy old lady named Gerdie - may make you her infamous shot "The Partially Shaven Bush." The shot is really strong, but after Gerdie tells you the disturbing story that goes along with it, you'll be happy it was.

Swamp Room
5216 Veterans Blvd.
888-5242
Late nights in Metairie and Kenner aren't all about sitting on your front porch drinking Miller High Life and shooting nutria; True sportsmen can be found engaging in a gentlemanly game of billiards at the Swamp Room. Their kitchen is open 'til 3am, serving beer munchies like the Swamp Burger - a half pound behemoth that could just as easily go on a rampage throughout the countryside as get put in your belly. Burgers and billiards, doesn't get much better. Well, I suppose it could if I could figure out this damnable intra-net jukebox electro-gizmo with over 100,000 melodious ditties. But then I'd probably never leave.

Dragon's Den
435 Esplanade Ave.
949-1750
Upstairs from Cafe Siam, the Den breathes comfort like a 19th century colonial bordello - a rare intimacy on which diverse musical acts paint their aural pictures. Dim red lights, buddha candles and mirrors mingle to illuminate the exotic decor and the artsy, eccentric crowd. Tuesday is open mic/poetry night where the spoken word rules. Signing up is free, and if you're game, you can probably find someone who would be more than happy to accompany your act with bongo drums, daddio.

The Chart Room
300 Chartres St.
522-1708
When it comes to people-watching in the Quarter, nothing quite compares to the Chart Room. Now, I'm not talking about getting bumped around by beer-toting tourists. This place is a few Quarter-scummed streets away from that. The whole damn twisted, lazy and drunk population of our fair city passes by the Chart Room window at one time or another, but inside the Chart Room is a classy joint as far as bars with naval motifs go. Have a well-seasoned bartender mix up something fancy like a Sauzerac and enjoy a moment of calm from the storm raging outside.

Parlay's
870 Harrison Ave.
482-4700
You can find beer at Parlay's, and lots of it. The huge bar has plenty of international brews on tap, and a big selection of bottles. With an extensive wine list to match, you're set to drink in style. Challenge regulars to a quick game of pool, or the Cherokee Indian statue to a long staring contest. Losing isn't so bad when you're feeling this good.

Mick's Irish Pub
4801 Bienville
482-9113
Cut ye a stout blackthorne and get a bit of the brogue at Mick's, me boy. The rowdy old chaps get wasted downstairs and the wee ones get their jollies upstairs with the arcade, pinball, darts, poker tables and whatever else ye might've happened to find up there. Should ye get a wee bit too pissed, have yeself a snooze on the couches in front of the TV and entertainment system. When ye wake, just grab yeself another pitcher, and try'n catch up with ye mates.

Igor's
2133 St. Charles Ave.
522-2145
The perks never end at Igor's. With a bar, food, pool tables, outdoor seating and even a laundromat, all they need is a few cots and you'd never have to go home. Hell, bring a pillow and sleep on the pool table. Monday night get free red beans and rice at 7pm to make you strong for the pool tournament at 8pm. Some of the cooler (if there is such a thing) tourists even find their way to Igor's to guzzle down Bloody Marys and Hurricanes before they hit Bourbon St. and are still able to maintain the mask of civilized behavior. You can't go wrong at this flagship of the Igor's empire, now just one of Igor's four fine establishments.

Three Legged Dog
400 Burgundy
412-8335
In lots of cities, bars close at 2am. Here, 2am is a great time to start drinking. Two am is when your grandmother starts to think about turning in, okay? So when you start drinking at two tonight, Three Legged Dog is a good beginning, with 2-for-1 drink specials starting at 2am to get you started quick, and foodstuffs to make you strong for the long morning ahead. They've got that internet jukebox thing. I don't know what that's about. But the true centerpiece is their HUGE ASS TV that takes up an entire wall! Thank God football's back.

Moonlight Cafe
1921 Sophie Wright Pl.
522-7313
As the sun sets, so the moon rises. Wither and yon, forever and aye. As the dollar drink after midnight special is finished, so another begins. And thus the urine passes to the porcelain receptacle and into the limitless ether, and yea the tank is emptied, and can thus be refilled. Thus does alcohol lubricate the spirit and the tongue, and we wax ephemeral on the comings and goings of fate, and the bounteous bosom of yon golden haired temptress with accent borne of foreign lands, serving yon $2 BBQ Beef Brisket sandwiches to lift yon spirits on yon woeful Monday night. O Sweet sustenance! Sweet Guiness on tap! Sweet moonlight!

Polynesian Joe's
869 Magazine St.
525-9301
The bucket of Rolling Rock beaded up and sweated in the hot sun, and we sat on the deck watching the women knock a volleyball back and forth. Sometimes they would misjudge the serve and send the ball flying over the palm trees and the fence and into the street outside. The sun was warm and the sand was cool when you kicked it up and it felt good to dig your bare feet down into it. Sometimes we would move to the shower to cool off, then return to our seats on the deck behind the bar and watch the volleyball game where no one kept score and no one cared about winning. No, it wasn't Tahiti, it was Polynesian Joe's.

Johnny White's Hole in the Wall
718 Bourbon St.
581-9200
If you live here, you go to Bourbon St. If you say you never go there, you are a liar. Maybe it's someone's birthday or someone's getting married, but you get down there every once in a while, so cut the crap. Now, when you do go down there, maybe it gets to be a little much after five or six blocks, which is why Johnny White's Hole in the Wall (just around the corner from the main Johnny White's on Bourbon) is so perfectly placed. Just steps off Bourbon, you can find a regular, kind of sleazy, no frills bar with five TVs and no Hand Grenades or Daiquiris. Admire the motorcycles on the street and sip your Maker's Mark to rest up for the return to Bourbon, but don't forget to keep coming back to this fine establishment even when you're not in the mood for Bourbon St. buffoonery that you'll deny later.

Monkey Hill
6100 Magazine St.
899-4800
Contrary to its name, this is not the place to monkey around, kids, so dress up, behave yourself and slip on your fancy drinking shoes, because this is where the good-time guys and gals come to mingle among their own. The music nights bring in a lot of talent, but beware! The covers are steep. But if you're like me, and believe there's a black hole in your wallet, the non-music, no-cover nights are just as fun. So swank it up, and get your drink on at this classy joint.

Checkpoint Charlie's
501 Esplanade Ave.
947-0979
It has everything. Pool. Food. Music. Laundry. Working bathrooms. Booze. Luge. Badminton. Okay, the last two were lies, but I think you get the point. Their drinks are affordable and they're located downtown in the heart of the Decatur Street chaos. The staff is very supportive, just in case you accidentally wash your hampster. Anyway, go there. Play pool and wash your whites while you watch a scary death metal band try to eat someone's face. Get a hamburger and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

The Balcony Bar
1104 Harmony
895-1600
I have one word for you: spacious. This is good for one very important reason, hiding from people you may not want to talk to. Duck under the pool table, talk to yourself underneath the stairs, look longingly off the balcony, gable behind closed doors, hide behind that big plant! There are so many possiblities. You'll salivate until the cows come home when you see the enormous selection of draft beers.

Whiskey Blue
333 Poydras
207-5016
Whiskey Blue is the ultimate hangout for the uber-trendy, all-black-wearing (non-gothic), dimly lit, too-cool-for-school crowd located in the equally trendirific hot-spot, the W hotel. Amazon women huddle around the bar like linebackers on Thursday Ladies night, so make sure to muster up your fiestiness before trying to cut in. When free apple martinis and stillettos are involved, things can get ugly.

Old Point Bar
545 Patterson St.
364-0950
I took a wrong turn somewhere between that last beer and the ferry and ended up walking down the levy with a stray dog at my heels and a swarm of mosquitoes at my back. Tired and lost, i stumbled into Old Point Bar and sat next to a local who writes self-esteem boosting messages on sticky notes and signs them George Bush - no extra charge. After challenging the President to a game of darts in the back, I retired to a cozy table by the front of the stage and tapped my feet to the beat of good fortune.

Cosimo's
1201 Burgundy
522-9715
As you walk into Cosimo's, you have a decision to make. You can: 1. Sit at the bar and catch up on good times with the bartender. Feeling lucky? You can also play a nice, wholesome game of video poker. 2. Walk into the back room and sink ever so comfortably into one of the leather sofas or plush chairs that line the back wall, while your date gets his or her ass kicked in pool by a local drunk.

Dry Dock Cafe
133 Delaronde St.
361-8240
Hungry? How about a nightcap? Well, you can have both a snack and a drink at the Dry Dock, a small neighborhood bar with a big heart and cheap booze. Don't want to miss the big game? You don't have to. A huge television sits in the corner for anyone who wants to watch. Video poker machines are located in a cramped little nook in the corner. Forget Harrah's! So, sit back, have a tall one and try to remember where you parked your car this time.

Pal's Lounge
949 N. Rendon
488-PALS
New daily drink specials. Complementary tapas. Friendly folks. Free cash give-aways. Alright, I was lying about the last one. But would that really make a difference? Pal's is so reasonably priced that you could simply look under your couch cushions and scrap together enough change to pull off one of the $3 bellinis. Forget the free cash give-aways, with all the free tapas, peanuts and popcorn, you'll feel like you hit the jackpot. This is a tastefully decorated neighborhood dive bar (minus the dive) that looks like it was put together by a team of graphic designers laboring for years that attracts Mid City hipsters in exile from all over New Orleans.

St. Charles Tavern
1433 St. Charles Ave.
523-9823
Now that our beloved Humming Bird has been spiritually (if not literally) bull dozed by the Warehouse District developer deathsquads, there are very few places to get a solid no frills diner meal at all hours, let alone one that doesn't reek of kitschy desperation. Enter St. Charles Tavern, last salvation for the insomniac in search of cheap eggs or a burger. Unlike the Humming Bird, however, this lower Garden District mainstay has a full bar and the food, while marginally more expensive, is actually pretty darn good across the board.

Funky Butt
714 N. Rampart
558-0872
If you want the real jazz, you've got to forget all about that Preservation Hall gibberish. That's something akin to asking for a real car and being handed a Model T. The true jazz of New Orleans, the living, breathing, today jazz, not the stale tourist card idea of jazz, is to be found at the Funky Butt. Maurice Brown, Kermit Ruffins, the Marsalis Family, and all the other fine musicians of today's New Orleans jazz all come to the Funky Butt to ply their trade. Do yourself a favor and see what it's all about.

Snug Harbor
626 Frenchmen
949-0696
An upscale Jazz bistro with a nautical theme? Wait, brother, before you shout, "did I just step into a J. Crew Catalogue?!" let me assure you, it ain't like that. Snug Harbor is the premier Jazz venue in the birthplace of Jazz. Intimate, upscale (but not stuffy), with incredible food - this is the place to catch New Orleans' luminaries and young up and comers doing their thing.

Cafe Brasil
2100 Chartres
949-0851
A great venue for cool-ass improv jazz and funk, even the occasional rock, Cafe Brasil features an enormous dance floor on which you may gyrate wildly til your heart's content. The bands are always top-notch, and music isn't the only art featured here. The walls are nicely adorned with surrealist paintings. This is the flag ship of the Frenchmen Street music scene.

Delta Blues
542 S. Jeff Davis
822-0358
A new down 'n dirty, down home, blues shack up in New Orleans' no-man's land, Mid-City, the home of the blues. Walter "Wolfman" Washington's been known to lay it on thick wit da guit-fiddle around here. A small, intimate stage assures you hear every mean note of that cryin' in your beer pickin' and playin' sound. They have pretty decent grub, too.

Dixie Tavern
3340 Canal St.
822-8268
Punk rock, baby! On the corner of Canal and Jeff Davis is about the last venue in the city who even bothers to book punk rock - and beyond. They don't just book it, they live it. With very cheap drinks, it's grimy like a bunch of tattooed punks have been living there for 18 months. If you like fast, loud, stupid, punch-drunk punk rock, don't you dare not be here, or we'll smash a beer bottle over your head.

Spotted Cat
623 Frenchmen
943-3887
Across from d.b.a., Spotted Cat is a fine establishment for jazzbos and beatniks alike. The signature venue of the New Orleans Jazz Vipers and also a regular showcase for Jeremy Lyons and the Deltabilly Boys, Tin Men, and other combos, the Spotted Cat is another intimate, highly impressive cornerstone of the Marigny Triangle, and I ask you, where else on planet Earth is there such prolific nightlife excellence as said Marigny Triangle? Nowhere! Nowhere, I say!

Shiloh
4529 Tchoupitoulas

When the floor in my apartment started shaking, I knew the bar downstairs must be open again. The sound system at Shiloh is peerless, rattling my floorboards to reggae on Thursdays, hip-hop on Fridays, jazz on Saturdays, and some combination thereof the rest of the week. This might bother me if the bar wasn't so damn cool. The noise upstairs doesn't get to me because I'm usually downstairs sitting in one of Shiloh's comfortable chairs, staring at that crazy lampshade in the back room or breaking it down on the dance floor. That's right, I said Breaking It Down. I can also eavesdrop on conversations at the bar from my bathroom, so watch yourself.

Hubert's
123 Elm St
423-1234
Dark and smelly, this bar is notable for its floor: it's covered with about a half-inch of pine-scented water. Drinks are warm and fizzy, and the bartender's mild case of Tourette's keeps things "real."
