Supporting Local Music Education
The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will be closing out its 2023-2024
season with a concert featuring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and pianist
Sean Chen. The proceeds from the concert will benefit the LPO's educational
programs. The show will take place at the Orpheum Theater starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17. Tickets are currently on sale for $45-$175.
The Louisiana Philharmonic's Music Director Matthew Kraemer
will be closing out his first inaugural year in the role. The night's show is
titled "Rooted in Rhythm: Celebrating NOLA jazz and Classical Traditions." The show
will celebrate the diverse musical and rhythmic influences on the city of New Orleans.
The orchestra will play first, followed by Sean Chen, a award-winning pianist
making his debut with the LPO. Chen will perform melodies on the piano that
reflect the influence and sounds of the roaring '20s. The night will close out
with a performance by the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band playing original music
accompanied by Ben Jaffe, their tuba player and founding member.
This benefit concert will be the first collaboration of the
LPO and Preservation Hall Jazz Band, two of the most iconic musical influences
in the city. The benefit will fundraise for a range of LPO musical education
programs, including their new partnership with NOLA public schools. The LPO also
runs a mentorship program in which kids in New Orleans receive an LPO mentor and learn
how to play an instrument, read music, music theory, and more while cultivating
a deep connection to music.
